This damage is located on the passenger side rear corner of a 2022 Tiffin RV. The fiberglass was cracked in multiple areas including around the exhaust port. The client had already removed the exhaust tip prior to us doing the repair. No new parts were needed. Everything was repairable.
In this photo, all of the loose areas in the fiberglass and paint were removed. I applied a thick wet coat of fiberglass to all of the cracked areas. This adds even more stability to the area.
The fiberglass separated into a few layers around the exhaust port area. I was able to insert wet fiberglass inside and out creating a new bond and structure. Once the fiberglass hardened I reshaped the outer circle and sanded all of the fiberglass down flat ready for a top coat of filler.
After sanding down all of the excess fiberglass, I applied a thin layer of top coat to finish off and level the layers. I didn't have a photo of the primer stage but trust me, primer was applied ;)
Many of the RV companies do have paint codes available. The only problem is that a lot of times they use custom colors from paint manufacturers. In other words, it's a difficult to find the exact paint color because they are not using colors from automobiles that have a defined paint code that we can pull up in our software. With almost 30 years of automotive painting experience, the paint code PS2 from a Chrysler popped in my head when looking at this color. Sure enough, it was the closest color match to this RV. I did have to modify the color slightly with spray out cards. It took about an hour or so to get the color correct. Once I applied all of the pigment, I then applied the clear coat and blended it out so that we wouldn't have to paint the entire rear section. This saves on paint material, time and most of all the clients wallet ;)
This repair took two days to complete at the client's location. Most repairs only take about a day to complete and the vehicle is drivable immediately. When doing a repair that takes 2 days, I usually do all of the bodywork, primer and prep work on the first day. I come back the next day to paint the panel and do any buff work that may be needed. The client had just purchased this RV but it had some touch-up on the passenger side to rear that they were not happy with.
These are the scratches that were covered with touch up. The area didn't need any bodywork just sand it down and repaint.
It's the same situation down low on the bottom portion of the rear bumper area.
The two scratches have been sanded out and primed. The other areas are scuffed down with 600 grit and the blend area was also prepped for a seamless blend.
The color was blended out and the rest of the panel was clear coated. Most of the time the paint codes are not easily available when it comes to RVs. Therefore I had to tint an existing color to make it match. When it comes to paint codes on cars, those are much easier since my software has all the data. RV companies make it difficult to retrieve paint codes but I've been around the block a few times and I know how to make it work ;)
Nothing had to be removed in order to do the repair. I was able to tape everything up nice and tight while doing the repair in front of the customer's house near the sidewalk.
I was able to complete the entire repair in about 5 hours. The RV was ready to drive as soon as I was untaping everything. Feel free to contact us with any questions that you may have. Thank you for reading this article. Have an awesome day!
